Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi stands in the Mahameghawana, also called Mahamewna Gardens, in Anuradhapura. Its significance lies in Buddhist tradition and continuing worship as well as its historical associations. Treat the precinct as a religious place.

UNESCO places the arrival of the Bodhi cutting with Sanghamitta in the third century BCE. Sri Lanka Tourism describes King Devanampiyatissa planting it in the Mahameghawana and connects the cutting to the tree at Bodh Gaya associated with the Buddha’s enlightenment. These accounts explain the tree’s place in religious history; they are not a scientific age assessment.
